qEEG Brain Mapping (Quantitative Electroencephalogram)

Electroencephalography (EEG) is the measurement of electrical patterns at the surface of the scalp reflecting cortical activity, and are commonly referred to as “brain waves”. Quantitative EEG (qEEG) is the analysis of the digitized EEG, and this is more commonly called “Brain Mapping”. The qEEG is an extension of the analysis of the visual EEG interpretation which assists our understanding of brain function.

qEEG is a procedure that processes the recorded EEG activity from a multi-electrode recording using a computer. The multi-channel EEG data is processed with algorithms. The digital data is statistically analyzed, sometimes comparing values with “normative” database reference values. The processed EEG is converted into color maps of brain functioning called “Brain maps”.
Brain waves are the rhythmic electrical impulses created when the millions of neurons inside your head communicate. Brain waves often reveal important information about overall brain function, including stress levels, thought patterns, and emotions. A qEEG can reveal brain wave patterns that are associated with impulsivity, cognitive inflexibility, anxiety, and other symptoms.

The qEEG information can be interpreted as a clinical tool to explore brain function, and to track the changes in brain function due to various interventions such as neurofeedback or medication. qEEG processing techniques with modern analytic software gives us the ability to view dynamic changes taking place throughout the brain during cognitive processing tasks, and this novel approach can be used to assist us in determining which areas of the brain are engaged and processing efficiently. The use of advanced techniques and neuro-imaging techniques such as Low Resolution Electromagnetic Tomography (LORETA) can map the actual sources of the cortical rhythms. These advanced approaches are changing our understanding of the dynamics and function of the human brain.

Neurofeedback and Brain Maps

Neurofeedback is a fun, interactive, non-invasive, medication-free treatment that helps strengthen and retrain the brain to achieve a healthier, more focused state. In order to help balance and optimize the brain, neurofeedback, which is a type of biofeedback, uses advanced computer technology to coach brain wave activity in real-time.

qEEG is a helpful tool when determining the best treatment for common conditions like ADHD, ASD, depression, anxiety, OCD, sleep issues, and stress management. Additionally, research indicates it can be transformational to improve peak performance.

The brain training techniques we use are unique to the individual because every brain is distinctive and requires a different approach. NeuroCALM offers qEEG-directed neurofeedback that will help you see improvements in the areas that need it most. Neurofeedback can help you learn how to alter and optimize your brainwaves in ways that will benefit you no matter what life challenges or learning-based goals you may have.

Some examples:

  • Improve Sleep
  • Reduce symptoms of ADHD or OCD
  • Enhance academic performance
  • Reduce addictive and compulsive behaviors
  • Break through the symptoms of brain injury
  • Reduce anxiety and depression
